Do these now, before any date is announced

  • Download your scorecard. NBEMS keeps it up for six months, and every counselling body asks for it.
  • Check your answer key. It lists each question ID, your response, the correct answer and the marks given. Question order was shuffled for each candidate, so compare by ID, not by position.
  • PwD candidates: get assessed now. MCC’s window closes at 5 PM on 9 October for the primary board.
  • Get your internship certificate. Internship had to be complete by 30 September 2026 to be eligible for counselling.
  • Work out which state quotas you qualify for. Half the seats in a state government college are filled by the state, not MCC, and each state decides who is eligible. State guides →
  • Build a first list from your rank. Last year’s closing ranks are a better guide than any date. Predictor →

The seat matrix: 63,177, and what that number includes

NMC published its PG seat matrix for 2026–27 on 29 September. It lists 63,177 seats in NMC-recognised colleges: 33,088 government, 21,892 private and 8,197 in deemed universities.

Before comparing it with last year, note three things. The total includes DM and MCh super-specialty seats, which are filled through NEET-SS, not NEET PG. It does not include DNB seats, which MCC counsels alongside MD/MS. And it does not include seats that are still under application, which NMC says will be added in a later update. Reports of how many seats have been added this year do not agree, so we are not quoting a figure.

Matrix seats are not counselling seats. Half of every state government college’s MD/MS intake goes to MCC’s All India Quota and half to the state. The state-by-state breakdown shows how big each state’s share is.

MCC: what is open, and what applies until the bulletin

On 1 October, MCC’s PG page said counselling would begin once NMC and NBEMS supply their seat matrices. Its only 2026 notice so far opens the PwD assessment portal for round 1. NMC’s new PwBD guidelines of 16 September replace the single disability-percentage cutoff with a branch-by-branch assessment. A board returns one of three verdicts: eligible, eligible with reasonable accommodation, or ineligible.

Until the 2026 bulletin comes out, the 2025 rules are the best guide. They are summarised below from MCC’s 2025 information bulletin. Expect changes, and read the new bulletin before you pay.

2025 ruleAll India QuotaDeemed
Registration fee (non-refundable)₹1,000 · ₹500 reserved/PwD₹5,000
Security deposit (refundable)₹25,000 · ₹10,000 reserved/PwD₹2,00,000
  • Four rounds: round 1, round 2, round 3 and the stray vacancy round.
  • Round 1 allowed a free exit. To upgrade into round 2 you had to report to the college and opt for upgradation.
  • The deposit was forfeited if you were allotted a seat in round 2 or later and did not join, or surrendered it.
  • A candidate who joined in round 3 could not resign or take part in later rounds.
  • The stray round took fresh registration and fresh choices. Candidates who had joined a state’s round 3 seat were removed before it.

How much a later round actually loosens cutoffs is measured round by round on the counselling page.

State counselling: who has published what

As of 1 October, Uttar Pradesh is the only large state with a 2026 PG brochure. DGME’s brochure of 3 August sets the rules but no dates. It limits government state-quota seats to candidates who did their MBBS in a UP college, and sets a two-year bond. Andhra Pradesh’s health university has barred 172 candidates from 2026 counselling for not joining or for discontinuing seats in 2025. No other state we checked had published a 2026 PG schedule.

The court ruling behind every state's eligibility rules

In Tanvi Behl v. Shrey Goel (2025 INSC 125), the Supreme Court held that residence-based reservation in PG medical admissions violates Article 14. A reasonable degree of institutional preference — favouring a state’s own MBBS graduates — is still allowed. In January 2026 the Chhattisgarh High Court applied the ruling, capping institutional preference at half of the state’s seats and opening the rest to merit.

That is why UP’s 2026 rules turn on where you studied MBBS, not where you live. Other states’ 2026 brochures are not out yet, so do not assume last year’s domicile rules still hold.

Also this week

  • Some candidates reported scores well below their own recall-based estimates. Doctors’ associations have written to the Health Minister asking for the paper and the response sheets. NBEMS has pointed to the answer key released on 1 October.
  • SMBT IMSRC, Igatpuri (Maharashtra) has been granted deemed university status, so its MD/MS seats move from Maharashtra’s counselling to MCC from 2026–27.
  • Sources give different orders for the tie-break rules. The scorecard shows when your MBBS or FMGE aggregate was used to break a tie; for the exact order, use the 2026 information bulletin.

Frequently asked questions

When will NEET PG 2026 counselling registration start?

Not announced as of 1 October 2026. MCC's PG page says the seat matrix from NMC and NBEMS is awaited before counselling begins. Dates you may have seen for October registration come from coaching sites, not from MCC.

Where do I download the NEET PG 2026 scorecard?

From your login on the NBEMS website, from 1 October 2026. It shows your marks out of 720, All India Rank and percentile, and stays available for six months only — so download it now. Counselling bodies ask for it.

How many PG seats are there in 2026–27?

NMC's matrix of 29 September lists 63,177 seats in recognised colleges — 33,088 government, 21,892 private and 8,197 deemed. That includes DM and MCh super-specialty seats, which are filled through NEET-SS. MD and MS together are about 58,100. DNB seats and seats still under application are not included.

What are the MCC counselling rules for 2026?

MCC has not released the 2026 bulletin. In 2025 there were four rounds, round 1 allowed a free exit, joining in round 3 barred resignation, and the security deposit was forfeited for not joining a seat from round 2 onwards. Plan on those until MCC says otherwise.

I am a PwD candidate. What do I need to do now?

Get assessed before counselling opens. MCC's round 1 primary assessment board runs from 1 to 9 October 2026, and the appellate board from 5 to 12 October. NMC's new guidelines assess eligibility branch by branch instead of applying one disability percentage to every course.
